NeOse Advance OverviewSetting Up the systemSensor Maintenance and Replacement for generation 1.5NeOse Advance Overview
NeOse Advance is an odor detection device that enables detection and recording of odors in near real-time. It is operated by Aryballe Suite, an application software bundle that executes protocols, allows for adjustment of experimental parameters, analyzes recorded data and provides reports.
With its two inlets, the NeOse Advance product allows for automated switching between the baseline (to measure the olfactive background at a given place and time) and the sample to be analyzed. The air taken in is directed through an internal fluidic system to the Core Sensor, where VOCs interact with Aryballe' proprietary biosensors immobilized on Mach-Zehnder Interferometers. The resulting optical signal is processed using Aryballe's algorithms to generate a unique odor signature.
The NeOse Advance uses 2 male Luer Lock type fluidic inlets (Baseline and Sample), sequentially flowing the air through the odor, temperature and humidity sensors. Having a separate inlet for baseline maintains a dedicated fluidic path that is maintained as clean as possible.
The baseline inlet of the NeOse Advance is connected to a removable PTFE filter to prevent environmental pollution from entering the device.
The NeOse Advance is powered through a USB cable connected to a computer Super-Speed USB port.
Setting Up the system
Fluidic Installation
To be performed for each use, before warming up
1. Unscrew the translucent caps covering the NeOse Advance inlets.
2. Place a non-sterile PTFE syringe filter (provided) on the NeOse Advance baseline inlet to protect the device from environmental pollution. To do so, gently push the female part (i.e. the shortest end) of the filter into the male part of the device and screw them together using the lock on the NeOse Advance Luer.

System Checks
Before starting any experiment, we strongly recommend performing a full system validation to ensure that the system is fully functional and provide traceability for future reference.
Two system check protocols have been designed: a cleanliness check to ensure that the fluidic paths are clean of any contamination, and a quality check to ensure that the NeOse Advance has a good performance level.

Changing the Core Sensor
Removing the old Core Sensor
The Core Sensor module appears as follows:
When changing the Core Sensor, make sure that the NeOse Advance is switched off to prevent the pumping of dust or particles into the device. The procedure to remove the module is the following:
1. Unlock the NeOse Advance black front cover by unscrewing the 2 front screws located under the device using the hexagonal tip screwdriver provided by Aryballe.
3. Release the tubing connecting the Core Sensor module to the humidity and temperature sensor by pressing the black rim of the push in fitting stud while pulling the tubing out.
4. Release the tubing connecting the Core Sensor module to the internal sampler by completely unscrewing the beige connector.
5. Disconnect the flat ribbon cable from the electronic broad by pressing on both sides of the black connector simultaneously and gently moving it laterally and upwards to remove. Do not disconnect the cable on the Core Sensor directly.
6. Completely unscrew the 4 screws to release the Core Sensor from its black support.
7. Remove the Core Sensor from NeOse Advance.
Installing the new Core Sensor
1. Place the new Core Sensor in the empty Core Sensor location and replace the 4 screws to fix the Core Sensor onto its support.
3. Reconnect in the tubing connecting the Core Sensor module to the internal sampler by screwing the beige connector.
4. Reconnect the humidity and temperature sensor tubing into the black push in fitting stud by pushing it so that the Core Sensor module is strongly connected to the NeOse Advance fluidic system.
5. Put the NeOse Advance front cover back in place by first inserting the black tabs into the device white cover.
6. To affix the case cover and complete the replacement process, screw the 2 screws located under the device using the provided screwdriver. Tighten the first screw halfway, then screw in the second screw before completely tightening both screws.
Removing the whole system
The whole system module can be seen in the following photo. It encompasses the Core Sensor module as well as the NeOse Advance Internal Sampler block. Replacement of the whole system can be warranted in case of contamination of the fluidic system or valve failure.
When changing the whole system, make sure that NeOse Advance is switched off to prevent the pumping of dust or particles into the device. The procedure to remove the module is the following:
